More Frank : His Belgian Odyssey

Emboldened to the positive response for my last Frank Newbould post, an as I am in Belgium, I offer you these two posters which contrast nicely his early and later work

Frank Newbould (24 September 1887 – 1951) was an English poster artist, born in Bradford.

Educated at Bradford College of Art and Camberwell School of Art, he worked mostly in London from the interwar period specialising in travel posters. His clients included the Empire Marketing BoardLondon Transport and its predecessors; the London & North EasternGreat Western and London, Midland and Scottish Railways, and the Orient and Cunard Lines.

In 1942 he joined the War Office as assistant to Abram Games where he produced eleven posters, including a series Your Britain, Fight for it Now.

Plus he did a lot of posters about Belgium and the Hook of Holland !

Another Yorkshire boy : no wonder his posters are consistently excellent !

Frank will also be long remembered (by me anyway) as being responsible for getting me into the poster hobby !

It was a dirty, cropped, moth eaten copy of this poster that did the trick
