This stunning large poster featuring Flexible (1984) was produced in 2024, in conjunction with Jean-Michel Basquiat: Made on Market Street at Gagosian, Beverly Hills.
Flexible is one of the iconic paintings that Basquiat made in Venice, California, using slats removed from a fence around his studio courtyard. In this work, he expanded his portrayal of the Black male, presenting a larger-than-life figure whose elastic, expressive pose combines the artist’s interests in symbolism and in qualities he characterised as “royalty, heroism, and the streets.”
